Ecclesiastes 8:17

Context
NET ©

then I discerned all that God has done: 1  No one really comprehends what happens 2  on earth. 3  Despite all human 4  efforts to discover it, no one can ever grasp 5  it. 6  Even if 7  a wise person claimed 8  that he understood, he would not really comprehend 9  it.

NIV ©

then I saw all that God has done. No-one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all his efforts to search it out, man cannot discover its meaning. Even if a wise man claims he knows, he cannot really comprehend it.

NASB ©

and I saw every work of God, I concluded that man cannot discover the work which has been done under the sun. Even though man should seek laboriously, he will not discover; and though the wise man should say, "I know," he cannot discover.

NLT ©

This reminded me that no one can discover everything God has created in our world, no matter how hard they work at it. Not even the wisest people know everything, even if they say they do.

MSG ©

you'll still never figure out the meaning of what God is doing on this earth. Search as hard as you like, you're not going to make sense of it. No matter how smart you are, you won't get to the bottom of it.

BBE ©

Then I saw all the work of God, and that man may not get knowledge of the work which is done under the sun; because, if a man gives hard work to the search he will not get knowledge, and even if the wise man seems to be coming to the end of his search, still he will be without knowledge.

NRSV ©

then I saw all the work of God, that no one can find out what is happening under the sun. However much they may toil in seeking, they will not find it out; even though those who are wise claim to know, they cannot find it out.

NKJV ©

then I saw all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun. For though a man labors to discover it , yet he will not find it ; moreover, though a wise man attempts to know it , he will not be able to find it .

Then I beheld
<07200> (8804)
all the work
<04639>
of God
<0430>_,
that a man
<0120>
cannot
<03201> (8799)
find out
<04672> (8800)
the work
<04639>
that is done

under the sun
<08121>_:
because
<0834>
though
<07945>
a man

labour
<05998> (8799)
to seek [it] out
<01245> (8763)_,
yet he shall not find
<04672> (8799)
[it]; yea further; though a wise
<02450>
[man] think
<0559> (8799)
to know
<03045> (8800)
[it], yet shall he not be able
<03201> (8799)
to find
<04672> (8800)
[it].

NET © Notes

tn Heb “all the work of God.”

tn Heb “the work that is done.”

tn Heb “under the sun.”

tn Heb “his”; the referent (man, in a generic sense) has been specified in the translation as the adjective “human” for clarity.

tn Heb “find.”

tn The term “it” does not appear in the Hebrew text, but is supplied in the translation for smoothness.

tn The particle אִם (’im, “even if”) introduces the protasis in a real conditional clause (“If a wise man …”); see IBHS 636-37 §38.2d; R. J. Williams, Hebrew Syntax, 74, §453.

tn The imperfect tense verb יֹאמַר (yomar, “to say”) functions in a modal sense, denoting possibility (see IBHS 508 §31.4e; R. J. Williams, Hebrew Syntax, 31, §169).

tn Heb “he cannot find”; or “he does not find.”

10 tn The term “it” does not appear in the Hebrew text, but is an implied direct object and has been supplied in the translation for smoothness and stylistic reasons.
