Psalms 53:4

All those who behave wickedly ¹  do not understand ²  – those who devour my people as if they were eating bread, and do not call out to God.

Will the evildoers never learn—those who devour my people as men eat bread and who do not call on God?

Have the workers of wickedness no knowledge, Who eat up My people as though they ate bread And have not called upon God?

Will those who do evil never learn? They eat up my people like bread; they wouldn’t think of praying to God.

Don't they know anything, all these impostors? Don't they know they can't get away with this, Treating people like a fast-food meal over which they're too busy to pray?

Have the workers of evil no knowledge? they take my people for food, as they would take bread; they make no prayer to God.

Have they no knowledge, those evildoers, who eat up my people as they eat bread, and do not call upon God?

Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge, Who eat up my people as they eat bread, And do not call upon God?

¹ tn Heb “the workers of wickedness.” See Pss 5:5; 6:8. Ps 14:4 adds כֹּל (kol, “all of”) before “workers of wickedness.”

² tn Heb “Do they not understand?” The rhetorical question expresses the psalmist’s amazement at their apparent lack of understanding. This may refer to their lack of moral understanding, but it more likely refers to their failure to anticipate God’s defense of his people (see vv. 5-6).
