Psalms 41:8

They say, ¹  ‘An awful disease ²  overwhelms him, ³  and now that he is bed-ridden he will never recover.’ ⁴ 

"A vile disease has beset him; he will never get up from the place where he lies."

"A wicked thing is poured out upon him, That when he lies down, he will not rise up again."

"Whatever he has, it is fatal," they say. "He will never get out of that bed!"

The rumor goes out, "He's got some dirty, deadly disease. The doctors have given up on him."

They say, He has an evil disease, which will not let him go: and now that he is down he will not get up again.

They think that a deadly thing has fastened on me, that I will not rise again from where I lie.

"An evil disease," they say , "clings to him. And now that he lies down, he will rise up no more."

¹ tn The words “they say” are not in the Hebrew text, but are supplied in the translation to make it clear that v. 8 contains a quotation of what the psalmist’s enemies say about him (see v. 7a).

² tn Heb “thing of worthlessness.” In Ps 101:3 the phrase refers to evil deeds in general, but here it appears to refer more specifically to the illness that plagues the psalmist.

³ tn Heb “is poured out on him.” The passive participle of יָצַק (yatsaq) is used.

⁴ tn Heb “and he who lies down will not again arise.”
