Malachi 1:7

You are offering improper sacrifices on my altar, yet you ask, ‘How have we offended you?’ By treating the table ¹  of the Lord as if it is of no importance!

"You place defiled food on my altar. "But you ask, ‘How have we defiled you?’ "By saying that the LORD’s table is contemptible.

" You are presenting defiled food upon My altar. But you say, ‘How have we defiled You?’ In that you say, ‘The table of the LORD is to be despised.’

"You have despised my name by offering defiled sacrifices on my altar. "Then you ask, ‘How have we defiled the sacrifices?’ "You defile them by saying the altar of the LORD deserves no respect.

"When you say, 'The altar of GOD is not important anymore; worship of GOD is no longer a priority,' that's defiling.

You put unclean bread on my altar. And you say, How have we made it unclean? By your saying, The table of the Lord is of no value.

By offering polluted food on my altar. And you say, "How have we polluted it?" By thinking that the Lord’s table may be despised.

" You offer defiled food on My altar. But say, ‘In what way have we defiled You?’ By saying, ‘The table of the LORD is contemptible.’

¹ sn The word table, here a synonym for “altar,” has overtones of covenant imagery in which a feast shared by the covenant partners was an important element (see Exod 24:11). It also draws attention to the analogy of sitting down at a common meal with the governor (v. 8).
