Isaiah 26:14

The dead do not come back to life, the spirits of the dead do not rise. ¹  That is because ²  you came in judgment ³  and destroyed them, you wiped out all memory of them.

They are now dead, they live no more; those departed spirits do not rise. You punished them and brought them to ruin; you wiped out all memory of them.

The dead will not live, the departed spirits will not rise; Therefore You have punished and destroyed them, And You have wiped out all remembrance of them.

Those we served before are dead and gone. Never again will they return! You attacked them and destroyed them, and they are long forgotten.

The dead don't talk, ghosts don't walk, Because you've said, "Enough--that's all for you," and wiped them off the books.

The dead will not come back to life: their spirits will not come back to earth; for this cause you have sent destruction on them, so that the memory of them is dead.

The dead do not live; shades do not rise—because you have punished and destroyed them, and wiped out all memory of them.

They are dead, they will not live; They are deceased, they will not rise. Therefore You have punished and destroyed them, And made all their memory to perish.

¹ sn In light of what is said in verse 14b, the “dead” here may be the “masters” mentioned in verse 13.

² tn The Hebrew term לָכֵן (lakhen) normally indicates a cause-effect relationship between what precedes and follows and is translated, “therefore.” Here, however, it infers the cause from the effect and brings out what is implicit in the previous statement. See BDB 487 s.v.

³ tn Heb “visited [for harm]” (cf. KJV, ASV); NAB, NRSV “you have punished.”
