Exodus 19:23

Moses said to the Lord, “The people are not able to come up to Mount Sinai, because you solemnly warned us, ¹  ‘Set boundaries for the mountain and set it apart.’” ² 

Moses said to the LORD, "The people cannot come up Mount Sinai, because you yourself warned us, ‘Put limits around the mountain and set it apart as holy.’"

Moses said to the LORD, "The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai, for You warned us, saying, ‘Set bounds about the mountain and consecrate it.’"

"But LORD, the people cannot come up on the mountain!" Moses protested. "You already told them not to. You told me to set boundaries around the mountain and to declare it off limits."

Moses said to GOD, "But the people can't climb Mount Sinai. You've already warned us well telling us: 'Post boundaries around the mountain. Respect the holy mountain.'"

And Moses said to the Lord, The people will not be able to come up the mountain, for you gave us orders to put limits round the mountain, marking it out and making it holy.

Moses said to the LORD, "The people are not permitted to come up to Mount Sinai; for you yourself warned us, saying, ‘Set limits around the mountain and keep it holy.’"

But Moses said to the LORD, "The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai; for You warned us, saying, ‘Set bounds around the mountain and consecrate it.’"

Moses said to the Lord, “The people are not able to come up to Mount Sinai, because you solemnly warned us, ¹  ‘Set boundaries for the mountain and set it apart.’” ² 

¹ tn The construction is emphatic: “because you – you solemnly warned us.” Moses’ response to God is to ask how they would break through when God had already charged them not to. God knew them better than Moses did.

² tn Heb “sanctify it.”
