Ecclesiastes 8:8

Context
NET ©

Just as no one has power over the wind to restrain it, 1  so no one has power over the day of his 2  death. Just as no one can be discharged during the battle, 3  so wickedness cannot rescue the wicked. 4

NIV ©

No man has power over the wind to contain it; so no-one has power over the day of his death. As no-one is discharged in time of war, so wickedness will not release those who practise it.

NASB ©

No man has authority to restrain the wind with the wind, or authority over the day of death; and there is no discharge in the time of war, and evil will not deliver those who practice it.

NLT ©

None of us can hold back our spirit from departing. None of us has the power to prevent the day of our death. There is no escaping that obligation, that dark battle. And in the face of death, wickedness will certainly not rescue those who practice it.

MSG ©

No one can control the wind or lock it in a box. No one has any say-so regarding the day of death. No one can stop a battle in its tracks. No one who does evil can be saved by evil.

BBE ©

No man has authority over the wind, to keep the wind; or is ruler over the day of his death. In war no man’s time is free, and evil will not keep the sinner safe.

NRSV ©

No one has power over the wind to restrain the wind, or power over the day of death; there is no discharge from the battle, nor does wickedness deliver those who practice it.

NKJV ©

No one has power over the spirit to retain the spirit, And no one has power in the day of death. There is no release from that war, And wickedness will not deliver those who are given to it.
