Joel 1:20

Even the wild animals ¹  cry out to you; ²  for the river beds ³  have dried up; fire has destroyed ⁴  the grassy pastures. ⁵ 

Even the wild animals pant for you; the streams of water have dried up and fire has devoured the open pastures.

Even the beasts of the field pant for You; For the water brooks are dried up And fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness.

Even the wild animals cry out to you because they have no water to drink. The streams have dried up, and fire has consumed the pastures.

Wild animals, dying of thirst, look to you for a drink. Springs and streams are dried up. The whole country is burning up.

The beasts of the field are turning to you with desire: for the water-streams are dry and fire has put an end to the grass-lands of the waste.

Even the wild animals cry to you because the watercourses are dried up, and fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness.

The beasts of the field also cry out to You, For the water brooks are dried up, And fire has devoured the open pastures.

¹ tn Heb “beasts of the field.”

² tn Heb “long for you.” Animals of course do not have religious sensibilities as such; they do not in any literal sense long for Yahweh. Rather, the language here is figurative (metonymy of cause for effect). The animals long for food and water (so BDB 788 s.v. עָרַג), the ultimate source of which is Yahweh.
