Exodus 23:9

“You must not oppress ¹  a foreigner, since you know the life ²  of a foreigner, for you were foreigners in the land of Egypt.

"Do not oppress an alien; you yourselves know how it feels to be aliens, because you were aliens in Egypt.

"You shall not oppress a stranger, since you yourselves know the feelings of a stranger, for you also were strangers in the land of Egypt.

"Do not oppress the foreigners living among you. You know what it is like to be a foreigner. Remember your own experience in the land of Egypt.

"Don't take advantage of a stranger. You know what it's like to be a stranger; you were strangers in Egypt.

Do not be hard on the man from a strange country who is living among you; for you have had experience of the feelings of one who is far from the land of his birth, because you yourselves were living in Egypt, in a strange land.

You shall not oppress a resident alien; you know the heart of an alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt.

"Also you shall not oppress a stranger, for you know the heart of a stranger, because you were strangers in the land of Egypt.

¹ tn The verb means “to crush.” S. R. Driver notes that in this context this would probably mean with an unfair judgment in the courts (Exodus, 239).
