Psalms 64:1

For the music director; a psalm of David. Listen to me, ²  O God, as I offer my lament! Protect ³  my life from the enemy’s terrifying attacks. ⁴ 

For the director of music. A psalm of David. Hear me, O God, as I voice my complaint; protect my life from the threat of the enemy.

<<For the choir director. A Psalm of David.>> Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint; Preserve my life from dread of the enemy.

<<For the choir director: A psalm of David.>> O God, listen to my complaint. Do not let my enemies’ threats overwhelm me.

Listen and help, O God. I'm reduced to a whine And a whimper, obsessed with feelings of doomsday.

<To the chief music-maker. A Psalm. Of David.> O God, let the voice of my grief come to your ear: keep my life from the fear of those who are against me.

Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint; preserve my life from the dread enemy.

<<To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.>> Hear my voice, O God, in my meditation; Preserve my life from fear of the enemy.

¹ sn Psalm 64. The psalmist asks God to protect him from his dangerous enemies and then confidently affirms that God will destroy his enemies and demonstrate his justice in the sight of all observers.

² tn Heb “my voice.”

³ tn The imperfect verbal form is used here to express the psalmist’s request.

⁴ tn Heb “from the terror of [the] enemy.” “Terror” is used here metonymically for the enemy’s attacks that produce fear because they threaten the psalmist’s life.
