Isaiah 51:12

“I, I am the one who consoles you. ¹  Why are you afraid of mortal men, of mere human beings who are as short-lived as grass? ² 

"I, even I, am he who comforts you. Who are you that you fear mortal men, the sons of men, who are but grass,

"I, even I, am He who comforts you. Who are you that you are afraid of man who dies And of the son of man who is made like grass,

"I, even I, am the one who comforts you. So why are you afraid of mere humans, who wither like the grass and disappear?

"I, I'm the One comforting you. What are you afraid of--or who? Some man or woman who'll soon be dead? Some poor wretch destined for dust?

I, even I, am your comforter: are you so poor in heart as to be in fear of man who will come to an end, and of the son of man who will be like grass?

I, I am he who comforts you; why then are you afraid of a mere mortal who must die, a human being who fades like grass?

"I, even I, am He who comforts you. Who are you that you should be afraid Of a man who will die, And of the son of a man who will be made like grass?

¹ tc The plural suffix should probably be emended to the second masculine singular (which is used in v. 13). The final mem (ם) is probably dittographic; note the mem at the beginning of the next word.

² tn Heb “Who are you that you are afraid of man who dies, and of the son of man who [as] grass is given up?” The feminine singular forms should probably be emended to the masculine singular (see v. 13). They have probably been influenced by the construction אַתְּ־הִיא (’at-hi’) in vv. 9-10.
