Genesis 44:5

Doesn’t my master drink from this cup ¹  and use it for divination? ²  You have done wrong!’” ³ 

Isn’t this the cup my master drinks from and also uses for divination? This is a wicked thing you have done.’"

‘Is not this the one from which my lord drinks and which he indeed uses for divination? You have done wrong in doing this.’"

What do you mean by stealing my master’s personal silver drinking cup, which he uses to predict the future? What a wicked thing you have done!’"

This is the chalice my master drinks from; he also uses it for divination. This is outrageous!'"

Is not this the cup from which my lord takes wine and by which he gets knowledge of the future? Truly, you have done evil.

Is it not from this that my lord drinks? Does he not indeed use it for divination? You have done wrong in doing this.’"

‘ Is not this the one from which my lord drinks, and with which he indeed practices divination? You have done evil in so doing.’"

¹ tn Heb “Is this not what my master drinks from.” The word “cup” is not in the Hebrew text, but is obviously the referent of “this,” and so has been supplied in the translation for clarity.

² tn Heb “and he, divining, divines with it.” The infinitive absolute is emphatic, stressing the importance of the cup to Joseph.

³ tn Heb “you have caused to be evil what you have done.”
