2 Samuel 2:27

Joab replied, “As surely as God lives, if you had not said this, it would have been morning before the people would have abandoned pursuit ¹  of their brothers!”

Joab answered, "As surely as God lives, if you had not spoken, the men would have continued the pursuit of their brothers until morning."

Joab said, "As God lives, if you had not spoken, surely then the people would have gone away in the morning, each from following his brother."

Then Joab said, "God only knows what would have happened if you hadn’t spoken, for we would have chased you all night if necessary."

"As God lives," said Joab, "if you hadn't spoken up, we'd have kept up the chase until morning!"

And Joab said, By the living God, if you had not given the word, the people would have gone on attacking their countrymen till the morning.

Joab said, "As God lives, if you had not spoken, the people would have continued to pursue their kinsmen, not stopping until morning."

And Joab said, " As God lives, unless you had spoken, surely then by morning all the people would have given up pursuing their brethren."

Joab replied, “As surely as God lives, if you had not said this, it would have been morning before the people would have abandoned pursuit ¹  of their brothers!”

¹ tn The Hebrew verb נַעֲלָה (na’alah) used here is the Niphal perfect 3rd person masculine singular of עָלָה (’alah, “to go up”). In the Niphal this verb “is used idiomatically, of getting away from so as to abandon…especially of an army raising a siege…” (see S. R. Driver, Notes on the Hebrew Text and the Topography of the Books of Samuel, 244).
