2 Samuel 11:23

The messenger said to David, “The men overpowered us and attacked us ¹  in the field. But we forced them to retreat all the way ²  to the door of the city gate.

The messenger said to David, "The men overpowered us and came out against us in the open, but we drove them back to the entrance to the city gate.

The messenger said to David, "The men prevailed against us and came out against us in the field, but we pressed them as far as the entrance of the gate.

"The enemy came out against us," he said. "And as we chased them back to the city gates,

He said, "The enemy was too much for us. They advanced on us in the open field, and we pushed them back to the city gate.

And the man said to David, Truly the men got the better of us, and came out against us into the open country, but we sent them back to the very doors of the town.

The messenger said to David, "The men gained an advantage over us, and came out against us in the field; but we drove them back to the entrance of the gate.

And the messenger said to David, "Surely the men prevailed against us and came out to us in the field; then we drove them back as far as the entrance of the gate.

The messenger said to David, “The men overpowered us and attacked us ¹  in the field. But we forced them to retreat all the way ²  to the door of the city gate.

¹ tn Heb “and came out to us.”

² tn Heb “but we were on them.”
