1 Peter 1:7

Context
NET ©

Such trials show the proven character of your faith, 1  which is much more valuable than gold – gold that is tested by fire, even though it is passing away 2  – and will bring praise 3  and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 4

NIV ©

These have come so that your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed.

NASB ©

so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

NLT ©

These trials are only to test your faith, to show that it is strong and pure. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold––and your faith is far more precious to God than mere gold. So if your faith remains strong after being tried by fiery trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.

MSG ©

Pure gold put in the fire comes out of it [proved] pure; genuine faith put through this suffering comes out [proved] genuine. When Jesus wraps this all up, it's your faith, not your gold, that God will have on display as evidence of his victory.

BBE ©

So that the true metal of your faith, being of much greater value than gold (which, though it comes to an end, is tested by fire), may come to light in praise and glory and honour, at the revelation of Jesus Christ:

NRSV ©

so that the genuineness of your faith—being more precious than gold that, though perishable, is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

NKJV ©

that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ,

NET © Notes

tn Or “genuineness,” the result of testing. On the other hand it may denote the process of testing: “that the proving of your faith…may bring praise.”

sn The author is not asserting that the quality of the readers’ faith is in doubt and will be proven by future trials. He declares their faith to be a present reality in v. 5 and 9, so in context v. 8 affirms that their faith is indeed genuine.

tn Grk “which is passing away but is tested by fire,” describing gold in a lesser-to-greater comparison with faith’s proven character.

tn Grk “that the testing of your faith…may be found unto praise,” showing the result of the trials mentioned in v. 6.

tn Grk “at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (cf. v. 13).
