Galatians 5:13

Context
NET ©

For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; 1  only do not use your freedom as an opportunity to indulge your flesh, 2  but through love serve one another. 3

NIV ©

You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.

NASB ©

For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

NLT ©

For you have been called to live in freedom––not freedom to satisfy your sinful nature, but freedom to serve one another in love.

MSG ©

It is absolutely clear that God has called you to a free life. Just make sure that you don't use this freedom as an excuse to do whatever you want to do and destroy your freedom. Rather, use your freedom to serve one another in love; that's how freedom grows.

BBE ©

Because you, brothers, were marked out to be free; only do not make use of your free condition to give the flesh its chance, but through love be servants one to another.

NRSV ©

For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another.

NKJV ©

For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

NET © Notes

tn Grk “brothers.” See note on the phrase “brothers and sisters” in 1:11.

tn Grk “as an opportunity for the flesh”; BDAG 915 s.v. σάρξ 2.c.α states: “In Paul’s thought esp., all parts of the body constitute a totality known as σ. or flesh, which is dominated by sin to such a degree that wherever flesh is, all forms of sin are likew. present, and no good thing can live in the σάρξGal 5:13, 24;…Opp. τὸ πνεῦμαGal 3:3; 5:16, 17ab; 6:8ab.”

tn It is possible that the verb δουλεύετε (douleuete) should be translated “serve one another in a humble manner” here, referring to the way in which slaves serve their masters (see L&N 35.27).
