Psalms 102:9

For I eat ashes as if they were bread, ¹  and mix my drink with my tears, ² 

For I eat ashes as my food and mingle my drink with tears

For I have eaten ashes like bread And mingled my drink with weeping

I eat ashes instead of my food. My tears run down into my drink

They bring in meals--casseroles of ashes! I draw drink from a barrel of my tears.

I have had dust for bread and my drink has been mixed with weeping:

For I eat ashes like bread, and mingle tears with my drink,

¹ sn Mourners would sometimes put ashes on their head or roll in ashes as a sign of mourning (see 2 Sam 13:19; Job 2:8; Isa 58:5).
