John 1:15

John ¹  testified ²  about him and shouted out, ³  “This one was the one about whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is greater than I am, ⁴  because he existed before me.’”

John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’"

John *testified about Him and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.’"

John pointed him out to the people. He shouted to the crowds, "This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘Someone is coming who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before I did.’"

John pointed him out and called, "This is the One! The One I told you was coming after me but in fact was ahead of me. He has always been ahead of me, has always had the first word."

John gave witness about him, crying, This is he of whom I said, He who is coming after me is put over me because he was in existence before me.

(John testified to him and cried out, "This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’")

John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’"

John ¹  testified ²  about him and shouted out, ³  “This one was the one about whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is greater than I am, ⁴  because he existed before me.’”

¹ sn John refers to John the Baptist.

² tn Or “bore witness.”

³ tn Grk “and shouted out saying.” The participle λέγων (legwn) is redundant is English and has not been translated.

⁴ tn Or “has a higher rank than I.”
