Jeremiah 48:27

For did not you people of Moab laugh at the people of Israel? Did you think that they were nothing but thieves, ¹  that you shook your head in contempt ²  every time you talked about them? ³ 

Was not Israel the object of your ridicule? Was she caught among thieves, that you shake your head in scorn whenever you speak of her?

"Now was not Israel a laughingstock to you? Or was he caught among thieves? For each time you speak about him you shake your head in scorn.

Did you not make Israel the object of your ridicule? Was she caught in the company of thieves that you should despise her as you do?

Wasn't it you, Moab, who made crude jokes over Israel? And when they were caught in bad company, didn't you cluck and gossip and snicker?

For did you not make sport of Israel? was he taken among thieves? for whenever you were talking about him, you were shaking your head over him.

Israel was a laughingstock for you, though he was not caught among thieves; but whenever you spoke of him you shook your head!

For was not Israel a derision to you? Was he found among thieves? For whenever you speak of him, You shake your head in scorn .

¹ tn Heb “were they caught among thieves?”

² tn Heb “that you shook yourself.” But see the same verb in 18:16 in the active voice with the object “head” in a very similar context of contempt or derision.

³ tc The reading here presupposes the emendation of דְבָרֶיךָ (dÿvarekha, “your words”) to דַבֶּרְךָ (dabberkha, “your speaking”), suggested by BHS (cf. fn c) on the basis of one of the Greek versions (Symmachus). For the idiom cf. BDB 191 s.v. דַּי 2.c.α.
