Acts 5:24

Now when the commander ¹  of the temple guard ²  and the chief priests heard this report, ³  they were greatly puzzled concerning it, ⁴  wondering what this could ⁵  be.

On hearing this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests were puzzled, wondering what would come of this.

Now when the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them as to what would come of this.

When the captain of the Temple guard and the leading priests heard this, they were perplexed, wondering where it would all end.

The chief of the Temple police and the high priests were puzzled. "What's going on here anyway?"

⁴ tn Grk “concerning them,” agreeing with the plural antecedent “these words.” Since the phrase “these words” was translated as the singular “this report,” the singular “concerning it” is used here.

⁵ tn The optative verb here expresses confused uncertainty.
