Psalms 90:4

Context

90:4 Yes, 5  in your eyes a thousand years

are like yesterday that quickly passes,

or like one of the divisions of the nighttime. 6

1 tn Heb “he sits in the ambush of the villages.”

2 tn Heb “his eyes for an unfortunate person lie hidden.” The language may picture a lion (see v. 9) peering out from its hiding place in anticipation that an unsuspecting victim will soon come strolling along.

3 tn Heb “may it be known among the nations, to our eyes, the vengeance of the shed blood of your servants.”

4 tn Heb “I spread out my hands to you.” Spreading out the hands toward God was a prayer gesture (see Exod 9:29, 33; 1 Kgs 8:22, 38; 2 Chr 6:12-13, 29; Ezra 9:15; Job 11:13; Isa 1:15). The words “in prayer” have been supplied in the translation to clarify this.

5 tn Or “for.”

6 sn The divisions of the nighttime. The ancient Israelites divided the night into distinct periods, or “watches.”
