16:22 “Now 10  the poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. 11  The 12  rich man also died and was buried. 13  16:23 And in hell, 14  as he was in torment, 15  he looked up 16  and saw Abraham far off with Lazarus at his side. 17 

1 tn Here δέ (de) has been translated as “then” to show the connection with Jesus’ previous statement.

2 tn Grk “is it not necessary that.” Jesus argues that no other day is more appropriate to heal a descendant of Abraham than the Sabbath, the exact opposite view of the synagogue leader.

3 sn Note that this is again a battle between Satan and God; see 11:18-23.

4 tn The word “long” reflects the emphasis added in the Greek text by ἰδού (idou). See BDAG 468 s.v. 1.

5 tn Or “bondage”; Grk “bond.”

6 sn Weeping and gnashing of teeth is a figure for remorse and trauma, which occurs here because of exclusion from God’s promise.

7 tn Grk “and Isaac and Jacob,” but καί (kai) has not been translated since English normally uses a coordinating conjunction only between the last two elements in a series of three or more.

8 sn The kingdom of God is a major theme of Jesus. It is a realm in which Jesus rules and to which those who trust him belong. See Luke 6:20; 11:20; 17:20-21.

9 tn Or “being thrown out.” The present accusative participle, ἐκβαλλομένους (ekballomenous), related to the object ὑμᾶς (Jumas), seems to suggest that these evildoers will witness their own expulsion from the kingdom.

10 tn Grk “Now it happened that the.” The introductory phrase ἐγένετο (egeneto, “it happened that”), common in Luke (69 times) and Acts (54 times), is redundant in contemporary English and has not been translated.

11 tn Grk “to Abraham’s bosom.” The phrase “carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom” describes being gathered to the fathers and is a way to refer to heaven (Gen 15:15; 47:30; Deut 31:16).

12 tn Grk “And the.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

13 sn The shorter description suggests a different fate, which is confirmed in the following verses.

14 sn The Greek term Hades stands for the Hebrew concept of Sheol. It is what is called hell today. This is where the dead were gathered (Ps 16:10; 86:13). In the NT Hades has an additional negative force of awaiting judgment (Rev 20:13).

15 sn Hades is a place of torment, especially as one knows that he is separated from God.

16 tn Grk “he lifted up his eyes” (an idiom).

17 tn Grk “in his bosom,” the same phrase used in 16:22. This idiom refers to heaven and/or participation in the eschatological banquet. An appropriate modern equivalent is “at Abraham’s side.”
