2:22 Now Eli was very old when he heard about everything that his sons used to do to all the people of Israel 1 and how they used to have sex with 2 the women who were stationed at the entrance to the tent of meeting.
9:24 So the cook picked up the leg and brought it and set it in front of Saul. Samuel 5 said, “What was kept is now set before you! Eat, for it has been kept for you for this meeting time, from the time I said, ‘I have invited the people.’” So Saul ate with Samuel that day.
17:25 The men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who is coming up? He does so 13 to defy Israel. But the king will make the man who can strike him down very wealthy! He will give him his daughter in marriage, and he will make his father’s house exempt from tax obligations in Israel.”
17:45 But David replied to the Philistine, “You are coming against me with sword and spear and javelin. But I am coming against you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel’s armies, whom you have defied!
19:4 So Jonathan spoke on David’s behalf 14 to his father Saul. He said to him, “The king should not sin against his servant David, for he has not sinned against you. On the contrary, his actions have been very beneficial 15 for you.
20:3 Taking an oath, David again 16 said, “Your father is very much aware of the fact 17 that I have found favor with you, and he has thought, 18 ‘Don’t let Jonathan know about this, or he will be upset.’ But as surely as the Lord lives and you live, there is about one step between me and death!”
22 Then David 23 got up and left, while Jonathan went back to the city.
29:3 The leaders of the Philistines asked, “What about these Hebrews?” Achish said to the leaders of the Philistines, “Isn’t this David, the servant of King Saul of Israel, who has been with me for quite some time? 33 I have found no fault with him from the day of his defection until the present time!” 34
1 tn Heb “to all Israel.”
2 tn Heb “lie with.”
3 tc The MT has “him” (אֹתוֹ, ’oto) here, in addition to the “him” at the end of the verse. The ancient versions attest to only one occurrence of the pronoun, although it is possible that this is due to translation technique rather than to their having a Hebrew text with the pronoun used only once. The present translation assumes textual duplication in the MT and does not attempt to represent the pronoun twice. However, for a defense of the MT here, with the suggested translation “for him just now – you will find him,” see S. R. Driver, Notes on the Hebrew Text and the Topography of the Books of Samuel, 72-73.
4 tn Heb “anoint.”
5 tn Heb “he” (also in v. 25); the referent (Samuel) has been specified in both places in the translation for clarity.
6 tn Or “sentries.” Some translate “outpost” (NIV) or “garrison” (NAB, NRSV, NLT) here (see 1 Sam 13:3). The noun is plural in the Hebrew text, but the LXX and other ancient witnesses read a singular noun here.
7 tn This verb form, as well as the one that follows (“appointed”), indicates completed action from the standpoint of the speaker. This does not necessarily mean that the Lord had already conducted his search and made his choice, however. The forms may be used for rhetorical effect to emphasize the certainty of the action. The divine search for a new king is as good as done, emphasizing that the days of Saul’s dynasty are numbered.
8 tn Heb “according to his heart.” The idiomatic expression means to be like-minded with another, as its use in 1 Sam 14:7 indicates.
9 tn Heb “commanded.”
10 tn Heb “don’t look toward.”
11 tn Heb “for not that which the man sees.” The translation follows the LXX, which reads, “for not as man sees does God see.” The MT has suffered from homoioteleuton or homoioarcton. See P. K. McCarter, I Samuel (AB), 274.
12 tn Heb “to the eyes.”
13 tn Heb “he is coming up.”
14 tn Heb “spoke good with respect to David.”
15 tn Heb “good.”
16 tc The LXX and the Syriac Peshitta lack the word “again.”
17 tn The infinitive absolute appears before the finite verb for emphasis.
18 tn Heb “said,” that is, to himself. So also in v. 25.
19 tn Heb “send me.”
20 tn Heb “commanded.”
21 tn Heb “be released [from duty].”
22 sn Beginning with 20:42b, the verse numbers through 21:15 in the English Bible differ from the verse numbers in the Hebrew text (BHS), with 20:42b ET = 21:1 HT, 21:1 ET = 21:2 HT, 21:2 ET = 21:3 HT, etc., through 21:15 ET = 21:16 HT. With 22:1 the verse numbers in the ET and HT are again the same.
23 tn Heb “he”; the referent (David) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
24 tn Heb “uncovers my ear.”
25 tn Heb “by giving.”
26 tn Heb “rises up against.”
27 tn Heb “runners.”
28 tn Heb “their hand is.”
29 tn Heb “to extend their hand to harm.”
30 tn Heb “there is not in my hand.”
31 tn Heb “Not good [is] this thing which you have done.”
32 tn Heb “you are sons of death.”
33 tn Heb “these days or these years.”
34 tn Heb “from the day of his falling [away] until this day.”
