Psalms 22:13

They ¹  open their mouths to devour me ²  like a roaring lion that rips its prey. ³ 

Roaring lions tearing their prey open their mouths wide against me.

They open wide their mouth at me, As a ravening and a roaring lion.

Like roaring lions attacking their prey, they come at me with open mouths.

Horns lowered, nostrils flaring, like a herd of buffalo on the move.

I saw their mouths wide open, like lions crying after food.

They gape at Me with their mouths, Like a raging and roaring lion.

They ¹  open their mouths to devour me ²  like a roaring lion that rips its prey. ³ 

¹ tn “They” refers to the psalmist’s enemies, who in the previous verse are described as “powerful bulls.”

² tn Heb “they open against me their mouth[s].” To “open the mouth against” is a Hebrew idiom associated with eating and swallowing (see Ezek 2:8; Lam 2:16).

³ tn Heb “a lion ripping and roaring.”
