Luke 18:23

But when the man ¹  heard this he became very sad, ²  for he was extremely wealthy.

When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was a man of great wealth.

But when he had heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich.

But when the man heard this, he became sad because he was very rich.

This was the last thing the official expected to hear. He was very rich and became terribly sad. He was holding on tight to a lot of things and not about to let them go.

But at these words he became very sad, for he had great wealth.

But when he heard this, he became sad; for he was very rich.

But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich.

But when the man ¹  heard this he became very sad, ²  for he was extremely wealthy.
