Isaiah 9:9

All the people were aware ¹  of it, the people of Ephraim and those living in Samaria. ²  Yet with pride and an arrogant attitude, they said, ³ 

All the people will know it—Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria—who say with pride and arrogance of heart,

And all the people know it, That is, Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria, Asserting in pride and in arrogance of heart:

and the people of Israel and Samaria will soon discover it. In their pride and arrogance they say,

All the people soon heard the message, Ephraim and the citizens of Samaria. But they were a proud and arrogant bunch. They dismissed the message, saying,

And all the people will have experience of it, even Ephraim and the men of Samaria, who say in the pride of their uplifted hearts,

and all the people knew it—Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria—but in pride and arrogance of heart they said:

All the people will know––Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria––Who say in pride and arrogance of heart:

¹ tn The translation assumes that vv. 9-10 describe the people’s response to a past judgment (v. 8). The perfect is understood as indicating simple past and the vav (ו) is taken as conjunctive. Another option is to take the vav on the perfect as consecutive and translate, “all the people will know.”

² tn Heb “and the people, all of them, knew; Ephraim and the residents of Samaria.”
