Isaiah 21:8

Then the guard ¹  cries out: “On the watchtower, O sovereign master, ²  I stand all day long; at my post I am stationed every night.

And the lookout shouted, "Day after day, my lord, I stand on the watchtower; every night I stay at my post.

Then the lookout called, "O Lord, I stand continually by day on the watchtower, And I am stationed every night at my guard post.

Then the watchman called out, "Day after day I have stood on the watchtower, my lord. Night after night I have remained at my post.

Just then, the lookout shouted, "I'm at my post, Master, Sticking to my post day after day and all through the night!

And the watchman gave a loud cry, O my lord, I am on the watchtower all day, and am placed in my watch every night:

Then the watcher called out: "Upon a watchtower I stand, O Lord, continually by day, and at my post I am stationed throughout the night.

Then he cried, "A lion, my Lord! I stand continually on the watchtower in the daytime; I have sat at my post every night.

Then the guard ¹  cries out: “On the watchtower, O sovereign master, ²  I stand all day long; at my post I am stationed every night.

¹ tn The Hebrew text has, “the lion,” but this makes little sense here. אַרְיֵה (’aryeh, “lion”) is probably a corruption of an original הָרֹאֶה (haro’eh, “the one who sees”), i.e., the guard mentioned previously in v. 6.

² tn The Hebrew term translated “sovereign master” here is אֲדֹנָי (’adonay). Some translations take this to refer to the Lord (cf. NAB, NASB, NRSV), while others take it to refer to the guard’s human master (“my lord”; cf. NIV, NLT).
