Genesis 19:4

Before they could lie down to sleep, ¹  all the men – both young and old, from every part of the city of Sodom – surrounded the house. ² 

Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—both young and old—surrounded the house.

Before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, both young and old, all the people from every quarter;

as they were preparing to retire for the night, all the men of Sodom, young and old, came from all over the city and surrounded the house.

Before they went to bed men from all over the city of Sodom, young and old, descended on the house from all sides and boxed them in.

But before they had gone to bed, the men of the town, all the men of Sodom, came round the house, young and old, from every part of the town;

But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the last man, surrounded the house;

Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house.

¹ tn The verb שָׁכַב (shakhav) means “to lie down, to recline,” that is, “to go to bed.” Here what appears to be an imperfect is a preterite after the adverb טֶרֶם (terem). The nuance of potential (perfect) fits well.

² tn Heb “and the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, from the young to the old, all the people from the end [of the city].” The repetition of the phrase “men of” stresses all kinds of men.
