Psalms 42:8

By day the Lord decrees his loyal love, ¹  and by night he gives me a song, ²  a prayer ³  to the living God.

By day the LORD directs his love, at night his song is with me—a prayer to the God of my life.

The LORD will command His lovingkindness in the daytime; And His song will be with me in the night, A prayer to the God of my life.

Through each day the LORD pours his unfailing love upon me, and through each night I sing his songs, praying to God who gives me life.

Then GOD promises to love me all day, sing songs all through the night! My life is God's prayer.

But the Lord will send his mercy in the daytime, and in the night his song will be with me, a prayer to the God of my life.

By day the LORD commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life.

The LORD will command His lovingkindness in the daytime, And in the night His song shall be with me––A prayer to the God of my life.

¹ sn The psalmist believes that the Lord has not abandoned him, but continues to extend his loyal love. To this point in the psalm, the author has used the name “God,” but now, as he mentions the divine characteristic of loyal love, he switches to the more personal divine name Yahweh (rendered in the translation as “the Lord”).

³ tc A few medieval Hebrew mss read תְּהִלָּה (tÿhillah, “praise”) instead of תְּפִלָּה (tÿfillah, “prayer”).
