Psalms 139:15

my bones were not hidden from you, when ¹  I was made in secret and sewed together in the depths of the earth. ² 

My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,

My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth;

You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.

You know me inside and out, you know every bone in my body; You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into something.

My frame was not unseen by you when I was made secretly, and strangely formed in the lowest parts of the earth.

My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.

My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.

¹ tc The Hebrew term אֲשֶׁר (’asher, “which”) should probably be emended to כֲּאַשֶׁר (ka’asher, “when”). The kaf (כ) may have been lost by haplography (note the kaf at the end of the preceding form).

² sn The phrase depths of the earth may be metaphorical (euphemistic) or it may reflect a prescientific belief about the origins of the embryo deep beneath the earth’s surface (see H. W. Wolff, Anthropology of the Old Testament, 96-97). Job 1:21 also closely associates the mother’s womb with the earth.
