A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him.
And following Him was a large crowd of the people, and of women who were mourning and lamenting Him.
Great crowds trailed along behind, including many grief–stricken women.
A huge crowd of people followed, along with women weeping and carrying on.
And a great band of people went after him, and of women making signs of grief and weeping for him.
A great number of the people followed him, and among them were women who were beating their breasts and wailing for him.
And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him.

1 sn The background of these women is disputed. Are they “official” mourners of Jesus’ death, appointed by custom to mourn death? If so, the mourning here would be more pro forma. However, the text seems to treat the mourning as sincere, so their tears and lamenting would have been genuine.
2 tn Or “who were beating their breasts,” implying a ritualized form of mourning employed in Jewish funerals. See the note on the term “women” earlier in this verse.
