Job 41:22

Strength lodges in its neck, and despair ¹  runs before it.

Strength resides in his neck; dismay goes before him.

"In his neck lodges strength, And dismay leaps before him.

"The tremendous strength in its neck strikes terror wherever it goes.

All muscle he is--sheer and seamless muscle. To meet him is to dance with death.

Strength is in his neck, and fear goes dancing before him.

In its neck abides strength, and terror dances before it.

Strength dwells in his neck, And sorrow dances before him.

¹ tn This word, דְּאָבָה (dÿ’avah) is a hapax legomenon. But the verbal root means “to languish; to pine.” A related noun talks of dejection and despair in Deut 28:65. So here “despair” as a translation is preferable to “terror.”
