Job 13:7

Will you speak wickedly ¹  on God’s behalf? ²  Will you speak deceitfully for him?

"Will you speak what is unjust for God, And speak what is deceitful for Him?

"Are you defending God by means of lies and dishonest arguments?

Or are you going to keep on lying 'to do God a service'? to make up stories 'to get him off the hook'?

Will you say in God’s name what is not right, and put false words into his mouth?

Will you speak falsely for God, and speak deceitfully for him?

Will you speak wickedly for God, And talk deceitfully for Him?

¹ tn The construction literally reads “speak iniquity.” The form functions adverbially. The noun עַוְלָה (’avlah) means “perversion; injustice; iniquity; falsehood.” Here it is parallel to רְמִיָּה (rÿmiyyah, “fraud; deceit; treachery”).

² tn The expression “for God” means “in favor of God” or “on God’s behalf.” Job is amazed that they will say false things on God’s behalf.
