Exodus 22:13

If it is torn in pieces, then he will bring it for evidence, ¹  and he will not have to pay for what was torn.

If it was torn to pieces by a wild animal, he shall bring in the remains as evidence and he will not be required to pay for the torn animal.

"If it is all torn to pieces, let him bring it as evidence; he shall not make restitution for what has been torn to pieces.

If it was attacked by a wild animal, the carcass must be shown as evidence, and no payment will be required.

If it has been torn by wild beasts, the torn animal must be brought in as evidence; no damages have to be paid.

But if it has been damaged by a beast, and he is able to make this clear, he will not have to make payment for what was damaged.

If it was mangled by beasts, let it be brought as evidence; restitution shall not be made for the mangled remains.

¹ tn The word עֵד (’ed) actually means “witness,” but the dead animal that is returned is a silent witness, i.e., evidence. The word is an adverbial accusative.
