Acts 14:5

When both the Gentiles and the Jews (together with their rulers) made ¹  an attempt to mistreat ²  them and stone them, ³ 

There was a plot afoot among the Gentiles and Jews, together with their leaders, to ill-treat them and stone them.

And when an attempt was made by both the Gentiles and the Jews with their rulers, to mistreat and to stone them,

A mob of Gentiles and Jews, along with their leaders, decided to attack and stone them.

One day, learning that both the Jews and non-Jews had been organized by their leaders to beat them up,

And when a violent attempt was made by the Gentiles and the Jews, with their rulers, to make an attack on them and have them stoned,

And when an attempt was made by both Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, to mistreat them and to stone them,

And when a violent attempt was made by both the Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, to abuse and stone them,

¹ tn Grk “So there came about an attempt” The introductory phrase ἐγένετο (egeneto, “it happened that”), common in Luke (69 times) and Acts (54 times), is redundant in contemporary English and has not been translated.

³ tn The direct object “them” is repeated after both verbs in the translation for stylistic reasons, although it occurs only after λιθοβολῆσαι (liqobolhsai) in the Greek text.
