Context

While he was speaking, Amaziah 1  said to him, “Did we appoint you to be a royal counselor? Stop prophesying or else you will be killed!” 2  So the prophet stopped, but added, “I know that the Lord has decided 3  to destroy you, because you have done this thing and refused to listen to my advice.”

NIV ©

While he was still speaking, the king said to him, "Have we appointed you an adviser to the king? Stop! Why be struck down?" So the prophet stopped but said, "I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel."

NASB ©

As he was talking with him, the king said to him, "Have we appointed you a royal counselor? Stop! Why should you be struck down?" Then the prophet stopped and said, "I know that God has planned to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel."

NLT ©

But the king interrupted him and said, "Since when have I asked your advice? Be quiet now before I have you killed!" So the prophet left with this warning: "I know that God has determined to destroy you because you have done this and have not accepted my counsel."

MSG ©

Amaziah interrupted him, "Did I ask for your opinion? Shut up or get thrown out!" The prophet quit speaking, but not before he got in one last word: "I have it on good authority: God has made up his mind to throw you out because of what you've done, and because you wouldn't listen to me."

BBE ©

But while he was talking to him the king said to him, Have we made you one of the king’s government? say no more, or it will be the cause of your death. Then the prophet gave up protesting, and said, It is clear to me that God’s purpose is your destruction, because you have done this and have not given ear to my words.

NRSV ©

But as he was speaking the king said to him, "Have we made you a royal counselor? Stop! Why should you be put to death?" So the prophet stopped, but said, "I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my advice."

NKJV ©

So it was, as he talked with him, that the king said to him, "Have we made you the king’s counselor? Cease! Why should you be killed?" Then the prophet ceased, and said, "I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not heeded my advice."

NET © Notes

tn Heb “he”; the referent (Amaziah) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

tn Heb “Stop yourself! Why should they strike you down?”

tn The verb יָעַץ (yaats, “has decided”) is from the same root as יוֹעֵץ (yoets, “counselor”) in v. 16 and עֵצָה (’etsah, “advice”) later in v. 16. The wordplay highlights the appropriate nature of the divine punishment. Amaziah rejected the counsel of God’s prophet; now he would be the victim of God’s “counsel.”
