1 Kings 12:9

He asked them, “How do you advise me ¹  to respond to these people who said to me, ‘Lessen the demands your father placed on us’?” ² 

He asked them, "What is your advice? How should we answer these people who say to me, ‘Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?"

So he said to them, "What counsel do you give that we may answer this people who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Lighten the yoke which your father put on us’?"

"What is your advice?" he asked them. "How should I answer these people who want me to lighten the burdens imposed by my father?"

"What do you think? What should I say to these people who are saying, 'Give us a break from your father's harsh ways--lighten up on us'?"'

And said to them, What is your opinion? What answer are we to give to this people who have said to me, Make less the weight of the yoke which your father put on us?

He said to them, "What do you advise that we answer this people who have said to me, ‘Lighten the yoke that your father put on us’?"

And he said to them, "What advice do you give? How should we answer this people who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Lighten the yoke which your father put on us’?"

He asked them, “How do you advise me ¹  to respond to these people who said to me, ‘Lessen the demands your father placed on us’?” ² 

¹ tn In the Hebrew text the verb “we will respond” is plural, although it can be understood as an editorial “we.” The ancient versions have the singular here.

² tn Heb “Lighten the yoke which your father placed on us.”
