Psalms 25:3

Context

25:3 Certainly none who rely on you will be humiliated.

Those who deal in treachery will be thwarted 1  and humiliated.

Psalms 25:5

Context

25:5 Guide me into your truth 2  and teach me.

For you are the God who delivers me;

on you I rely all day long.

Psalms 37:9

Context

37:9 Wicked men 3  will be wiped out, 4 

but those who rely on the Lord are the ones who will possess the land. 5 

Psalms 37:34

Context

37:34 Rely 6  on the Lord! Obey his commands! 7 

Then he will permit you 8  to possess the land;

Psalms 52:9

Context

52:9 I will continually 10  thank you when 11  you execute judgment; 12 

I will rely 13  on you, 14  for your loyal followers know you are good. 15 

1 tn Heb “those who deal in treachery in vain.” The adverb רֵיקָם (reqam, “in vain”) probably refers to the failure (or futility) of their efforts. Another option is to understand it as meaning “without cause” (cf. NIV “without excuse”; NRSV “wantonly treacherous”).

2 sn The Lord’s commandments are referred to as truth here because they are a trustworthy and accurate expression of the divine will.

3 tn Heb “for evil men.” The conjunction כִּי (ki, “for”) relates to the exhortations in v. 8; there is no reason to be frustrated, for the evildoers will be punished in due time.

4 tn Or “cut off, removed.”

5 tn Heb “and those who wait on the Lord, they will possess the land.”

6 tn Or “wait.”

7 tn Heb “keep his way.” The Lord’s “way” refers here to the “conduct required” by the Lord. In Ps 25 the Lord’s “ways” are associated with his covenantal demands (see vv. 4, 9-10). See also Ps 119:3 (cf. vv. 1, 4), as well as Deut 8:6; 10:12; 11:22; 19:9; 26:17; 28:9; 30:16.

8 tn Heb “and he will lift you up.” The prefixed verbal form with vav (ו) is best taken here as a result clause following the imperatives in the preceding lines.

9 tn Heb “when evil men are cut off you will see.”

10 tn Or, hyperbolically, “forever.”

11 tn Or “for.”

12 tn Heb “you have acted.” The perfect verbal form (1) probably indicates a future perfect here. The psalmist promises to give thanks when the expected vindication has been accomplished. Other options include (2) a generalizing (“for you act”) or (3) rhetorical (“for you will act”) use.

13 tn Or “wait.”

14 tn Heb “your name.” God’s “name” refers here to his reputation and revealed character.

15 tn Heb “for it is good in front of your loyal followers.”
