Psalms 146:5

Context

146:5 How blessed is the one whose helper is the God of Jacob,

whose hope is in the Lord his God,

1 tn Heb “this [is the] generation of the ones seeking him, the ones seeking your face, Jacob.” To “seek the Lord’s face” means to seek his favor through prayer (see 2 Sam 21:1; Pss 27:8; 105:4).

sn This verse presents a somewhat idealized view of Jacobs descendants as devoted worshipers of the Lord.

2 tn Heb “the Lord of hosts is with us.” The title “Lord of hosts” here pictures the Lord as a mighty warrior-king who leads armies into battle (see Ps 24:10). The military imagery is further developed in vv. 8-9.

3 tn That is, Israel, or Judah (see Ps 20:1).

4 tn Heb “our elevated place” (see Pss 9:9; 18:2).

5 tn Heb “the Lord of hosts is with us.” The title “Lord of hosts” here pictures the Lord as a mighty warrior-king who leads armies into battle (see Ps 24:10). The military imagery is further developed in vv. 8-9.

6 tn That is, Israel, or Judah (see Ps 20:1).

7 tn Heb “our elevated place” (see Pss 9:9; 18:2).

8 tn Heb “he chose for us our inheritance.” The prefixed verbal form is understood as a preterite (see “subdued” in v. 3).

9 tn Heb “the pride of.” The phrase is appositional to “our inheritance,” indicating that the land is here described as a source of pride to God’s people.

10 tn That is, Israel.

11 sn Jacob whom he loves. The Lord’s covenantal devotion to his people is in view.

12 tn Heb “I will declare forever.” The object needs to be supplied; God’s just judgment is in view.

13 tn Heb “from your shout.” The noun is derived from the Hebrew verb גָּעַר (gaar), which is often understood to mean “rebuke.” In some cases it is apparent that scolding or threatening is in view (see Gen 37:10; Ruth 2:16; Zech 3:2). However, in militaristic contexts this translation is inadequate, for the verb refers in this setting to the warrior’s battle cry, which terrifies and paralyzes the enemy. See A. Caquot, TDOT 3:53, and note the use of the verb in Pss 68:30; 106:9; Nah 1:4, as well as the related noun in Job 26:11; Pss 9:5; 18:15; 104:7; Isa 50:2; 51:20; 66:15.

14 tn Or “chariot,” but even so the term is metonymic for the charioteer.

15 tn Heb “he fell asleep, and [the] chariot and [the] horse.” Once again (see v. 5) “sleep” refers here to the “sleep” of death.

16 tn Heb “because a statute for Israel [is] it.”

17 tn Heb “does not understand.”

18 tn Or “offspring”; Heb “seed.”

19 tc Some mss have “Israel,” which appears in the parallel version of this psalm in 1 Chr 16:13.

20 tn Heb “his”; the referent (God) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

21 tn Heb “sons.”

22 tn Heb “his”; the referent (God) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

23 tn Heb “the powerful [one] of Jacob.”

24 tn The plural form of the noun may indicate degree or quality; David envisions a special dwelling place (see Pss 43:3; 46:4; 84:1).

25 tn Heb “the powerful [one] of Jacob.”
