Isaiah 14:23

Context

14:23 “I will turn her into a place that is overrun with wild animals 1

and covered with pools of stagnant water.

I will get rid of her, just as one sweeps away dirt with a broom,” 2

says the Lord who commands armies.

Isaiah 45:13

Context

45:13 It is me – I stir him up and commission him; 3

I will make all his ways level.

He will rebuild my city;

he will send my exiled people home,

but not for a price or a bribe,”

says the Lord who commands armies.

Isaiah 45:18

Context

45:18 For this is what the Lord says,

the one who created the sky –

he is the true God, 4

the one who formed the earth and made it;

he established it,

he did not create it without order, 5

he formed it to be inhabited –

“I am the Lord, I have no peer.

Isaiah 45:21

Context

45:21 Tell me! Present the evidence! 6

Let them consult with one another!

Who predicted this in the past?

Who announced it beforehand?

Was it not I, the Lord?

I have no peer, there is no God but me,

a God who vindicates and delivers; 7

there is none but me.

Isaiah 49:26

Context

49:26 I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh;

they will get drunk on their own blood, as if it were wine. 8

Then all humankind 9  will recognize that

I am the Lord, your deliverer,

your protector, 10  the powerful ruler of Jacob.” 11

Isaiah 51:6

Context

51:6 Look up at the sky!

Look at the earth below!

For the sky will dissipate 12  like smoke,

and the earth will wear out like clothes;

its residents will die like gnats.

But the deliverance I give 13  is permanent;

the vindication I provide 14  will not disappear. 15

Isaiah 56:7

Context

56:7 I will bring them to my holy mountain;

I will make them happy in the temple where people pray to me. 16

Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted on my altar,

for my temple will be known as a temple where all nations may pray.” 17

Isaiah 58:5

Context

58:5 Is this really the kind of fasting I want? 18

Do I want a day when people merely humble themselves, 19

bowing their heads like a reed

and stretching out 20  on sackcloth and ashes?

Is this really what you call a fast,

a day that is pleasing to the Lord?

Isaiah 63:7

Context
A Prayer for Divine Intervention

63:7 I will tell of the faithful acts of the Lord,

of the Lord’s praiseworthy deeds.

I will tell about all 21  the Lord did for us,

the many good things he did for the family of Israel, 22

because of 23  his compassion and great faithfulness.

Isaiah 65:8

Context

65:8 This is what the Lord says:

“When 24  juice is discovered in a cluster of grapes,

someone says, ‘Don’t destroy it, for it contains juice.’ 25

So I will do for the sake of my servants –

I will not destroy everyone. 26

1 tn Heb “I will make her into a possession of wild animals.” It is uncertain what type of animal קִפֹּד (qippod) refers to. Some suggest a rodent (cf. NASB, NRSV “hedgehog”), others an owl (cf, NAB, NIV, TEV).

2 tn Heb “I will sweep her away with the broom of destruction.”

3 tn Heb “I stir him up in righteousness”; NASB “I have aroused him.” See the note at 41:2. Cyrus (cf. 44:28) is in view here.

4 tn Heb “he [is] the God.” The article here indicates uniqueness.

5 tn Or “unformed.” Gen 1:2 describes the world as “unformed” (תֹהוּ, tohu) prior to God’s creative work, but God then formed the world and made it fit for habitation.

6 tn Heb “Declare! Bring near!”; NASB “Declare and set forth your case.” See 41:21.

7 tn Or “a righteous God and deliverer”; NASB, NIV, NRSV “a righteous God and a Savior.”

8 sn Verse 26a depicts siege warfare and bloody defeat. The besieged enemy will be so starved they will their own flesh. The bloodstained bodies lying on the blood-soaked battle site will look as if they collapsed in drunkenness.

9 tn Heb “flesh” (so KJV, NASB).

10 tn Heb “your redeemer.” See the note at 41:14.

11 tn Heb “the powerful [one] of Jacob.” See 1:24.

12 tn Heb “will be torn in pieces.” The perfect indicates the certitude of the event, from the Lord’s rhetorical perspective.

13 tn Heb “my deliverance.” The same Hebrew word can also be translated “salvation” (so KJV, NAB, NASB, NIV, NRSV, NLT); cf. CEV “victory.”

14 tn Heb “my righteousness [or “vindication”].”

15 tn Heb “will not be shattered [or “dismayed”].”

16 tn Heb “in the house of my prayer.”

17 tn Heb “for my house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations.”

18 tn Heb “choose” (so NASB, NRSV); NAB “wish.”

19 tn Heb “a day when man humbles himself.” The words “Do I want” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

20 tn Or “making [their] bed.”

21 tn Heb “according to all which.”

22 tn Heb “greatness of goodness to the house of Israel which he did for them.”

23 tn Heb “according to.”

24 tn Heb “just as.” In the Hebrew text the statement is one long sentence, “Just as…, so I will do….”

25 tn Heb “for a blessing is in it.”

26 tn Heb “by not destroying everyone.”
