Ezekiel 3:21

3:21 However, if you warn the righteous person not to sin, and he 1  does not sin, he will certainly live because he was warned, and you will have saved your own life.”

7:4 My eye will not pity you; I will not spare 2  you. 3  For I will hold you responsible for your behavior, 4  and you will suffer the consequences of your abominable practices. 5  Then you will know that I am the Lord!

2 tn The meaning of the Hebrew term is primarily emotional: “to pity,” which in context implies an action, as in being moved by pity in order to spare them from the horror of their punishment.

3 tn The pronoun “you” is not in the Hebrew text, but is implied.

4 tn “I will set your behavior on your head.”

5 tn Heb “and your abominable practices will be among you.”

6 tn The meaning of the Hebrew term is primarily emotional: “to pity,” which in context implies an action, as in being moved by pity in order to spare them from the horror of their punishment.

7 sn The book of Ezekiel frequently refers to the Israelites as a rebellious house (Ezek 2:5, 6, 8; 3:9, 26-27; 12:2-3, 9, 25; 17:12; 24:3).

11 tn Heb “restores to the debtor his pledge.” The root occurs in Exod 22:25 in reference to restoring a man’s garment as a pledge before nightfall.

12 tn The Hebrew term refers to seizure of property, usually by the rich (Isa 3:14; 10:2; Mic 2:2 [see Lev 5:21, 22]).

13 tc This translation follows the LXX. The MT reads “restrains his hand from the poor,” which makes no sense here.

14 tn Or “in his father’s punishment.” The phrase “in/for [a person’s] iniquity/punishment” occurs fourteen times in Ezekiel: here and in vv. 18, 19, 20; 3:18, 19; 4:17; 7:13, 16; 24:23; 33:6, 8, 9; 39:23. The Hebrew word for “iniquity” may also mean the “punishment for iniquity.”

15 tn Heb “in your uncleanness (is) obscene conduct.”

16 tn Heb “because I cleansed you.” In this context (see especially the very next statement), the statement must refer to divine intention and purpose. Despite God’s efforts to cleanse his people, they resisted him and remained morally impure.

17 tn The Hebrew text adds the word “again.”
