Acts 23:17

Context
23:17 Paul called 10  one of the centurions 11  and said, “Take this young man to the commanding officer, 12  for he has something to report to him.”

1 tn Grk “And he.” Because of the length of the Greek sentence, the conjunction καί (kai) has not been translated here. Instead a new English sentence is begun.

2 tn Or “the sky” (the same Greek word means both “heaven” and “sky”).

3 tn On the heavens “opening,” see Matt 3:16; Luke 3:21; Rev 19:11 (cf. BDAG 84 s.v. ἀνοίγω 2). This is the language of a vision or a revelatory act of God.

4 tn Or “a large linen cloth” (the term was used for the sail of a ship; BDAG 693 s.v. ὀθόνη).

5 tn Or “coming down.”

6 tn Or “to the ground.”

7 tn The imperfect verb ηὐκαίρουν (hukairoun) has been translated as a customary or habitual imperfect.

8 tn BDAG 406-7 s.v. εὐκαιρέω has “used to spend their time in nothing else than telling Ac 17:21.”

9 sn This is a parenthetical note by the author. The reference to newness may be pejorative.

10 tn Grk “calling…Paul said.” The participle προσκαλεσάμενος (proskalesameno") has been translated as a finite verb due to requirements of contemporary English style.

11 sn See the note on the word centurion in 10:1.

12 tn Grk “the chiliarch” (an officer in command of a thousand soldiers). See note on the term “commanding officer” in v. 10.
