1 Kings 8:25

Context
8:25 Now, O Lord, God of Israel, keep the promise you made to your servant, my father David, when you said, ‘You will never fail to have a successor ruling before me on the throne of Israel, 1  provided that your descendants watch their step and serve me as you have done.’ 2

1 Kings 8:66

Context
8:66 On the fifteenth day after the festival started, 3  he dismissed the people. They asked God to empower the king 4  and then went to their homes, happy and content 5  because of all the good the Lord had done for his servant David and his people Israel.

1 Kings 11:38

Context
11:38 You must obey 6  all I command you to do, follow my instructions, 7  do what I approve, 8  and keep my rules and commandments, like my servant David did. Then I will be with you and establish for you a lasting dynasty, as I did for David; 9  I will give you Israel.

1 Kings 18:12

Context
18:12 But when I leave you, the Lord’s spirit will carry you away so I can’t find you. 10  If I go tell Ahab I’ve seen you, he won’t be able to find you and he will kill me. 11  That would not be fair, 12  because your servant has been a loyal follower of 13  the Lord from my youth.

1 Kings 18:36

Context
18:36 When it was time for the evening offering, 14  Elijah the prophet approached the altar 15  and prayed: “O Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, prove 16  today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.

1 Kings 18:44

Context
18:44 The seventh time the servant 17  said, “Look, a small cloud, the size of the palm of a man’s hand, is rising up from the sea.” Elijah 18  then said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up the chariots and go down, so that the rain won’t overtake you.’” 19

1 Kings 20:9

Context
20:9 So he said to the messengers of Ben Hadad, “Say this to my master, the king, ‘I will give you everything you demanded at first from your servant, but I am unable to agree to this latest demand.’” 20  So the messengers went back and gave their report.

1 Kings 20:39

Context
20:39 When the king passed by, he called out to the king, “Your servant went out into the heat 21  of the battle, and then a man turned aside and brought me a prisoner. 22  He told me, ‘Guard this prisoner. If he ends up missing for any reason, 23  you will pay with your life or with a talent 24  of silver.’ 25

1 tn Heb “there will not be cut off from you a man from before me sitting on the throne of Israel.”

2 tn Heb “guard their way by walking before me as you have walked before me.”

3 tn Heb “on the eighth day” (that is, the day after the second seven-day sequence).

4 tn Heb “they blessed the king.”

5 tn Heb “good of heart.”

6 tn Heb “If you obey.” In the Hebrew text v. 38 is actually one long conditional sentence, which has been broken into two parts in the translation for stylistic purposes.

7 tn Heb “walk in my ways.”

8 tn Heb “do what is right in my eyes.”

9 tn Heb “I will build for you a permanent house, like I built for David.”

10 tn Heb “to [a place] which I do not know.”

11 tn Heb “and I will go to inform Ahab and he will not find you and he will kill me.”

12 tn The words “that would not be fair” are added to clarify the logic of Obadiah’s argument.

13 tn Heb “has feared the Lord” (also see the note at 1 Kgs 18:3).

14 tn Heb “at the offering up of the offering.”

15 tn The words “the altar” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

16 tn Heb “let it be known.”

17 tn Heb “he”; the referent (the servant) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

18 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Elijah) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

19 tn Heb “so that the rain won’t restrain you.”

20 tn Heb “all which you sent to your servant in the beginning I will do, but this thing I am unable to do.”

21 tn Heb “middle.”

22 tn Heb “man” (also a second time later in this verse).

23 tn Heb “if being missed, he is missed.” The emphatic infinitive absolute before the finite verbal form lends solemnity to the warning.

24 tn The Hebrew term כִּכָּר (kikkar, “circle”) refers generally to something that is round. When used of metals it can refer to a disk-shaped weight made of the metal or to a standard unit of weight, generally regarded as a talent. Since the accepted weight for a talent of metal is about 75 pounds, this would have amounted to about 75 pounds of silver.

25 tn Heb “your life will be in place of his life, or a unit of silver you will pay.”
