Matthew 2:13

The Escape to Egypt

2:13 After they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to look for the child to kill him.”

Matthew 4:6

4:6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you and ‘with their hands they will lift you up, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”

Matthew 16:21

First Prediction of Jesus’ Death and Resurrection

16:21 From that time on Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and experts in the law, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.

Matthew 19:28

19:28 Jesus 10  said to them, “I tell you the truth: 11  In the age when all things are renewed, 12  when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging 13  the twelve tribes of Israel.

Matthew 27:24

Jesus is Condemned and Mocked

27:24 When 14  Pilate saw that he could do nothing, but that instead a riot was starting, he took some water, washed his hands before the crowd and said, “I am innocent of this man’s blood. You take care of it yourselves!” 15

tn Grk “behold, an angel.” The Greek word ἰδού (idou) has not been translated because it has no exact English equivalent here, but adds interest and emphasis (BDAG 468 s.v. 1).

tn Or “the angel of the Lord.” See the note on the word “Lord” in 1:20.

sn See the note on King Herod in 2:1. Herod the Great was particularly ruthless regarding the succession to his throne.

sn A quotation from Ps 91:11. This was not so much an incorrect citation as a use in a wrong context (a misapplication of the passage).

sn A quotation from Ps 91:12.

tn Grk “From then.”

sn The necessity that the Son of Man suffer is the particular point that needed emphasis since for many 1st century Jews the Messiah was a glorious and powerful figure, not a suffering one.

tn Or “and scribes.” See the note on the phrase “experts in the law” in 2:4.

10 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

11 tn Grk “Truly (ἀμήν, amhn), I say to you.”

12 sn The Greek term translated the age when all things are renewed (παλιγγενεσία, palingenesia) is understood as a reference to the Messianic age, the time when all things are renewed and restored (cf. Rev 21:5).

13 sn The statement you…will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel looks at the future authority the Twelve will have when Jesus returns. They will share in Israel’s judgment.

14 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

15 sn You take care of it yourselves! Compare the response of the chief priests and elders to Judas in 27:4. The expression is identical except that in 27:4 it is singular and here it is plural.
