Context
NET ©

For this reason I 1  will mourn and wail; I will walk around barefoot 2  and without my outer garments. 3  I will howl 4  like a wild dog, 5  and screech 6  like an owl. 7

NIV ©

Because of this I will weep and wail; I will go about barefoot and naked. I will howl like a jackal and moan like an owl.

NASB ©

Because of this I must lament and wail, I must go barefoot and naked; I must make a lament like the jackals And a mourning like the ostriches.

NLT ©

Because of all this, I will mourn and lament. I will walk around naked and barefoot in sorrow and shame. I will howl like a jackal and wail like an ostrich.

MSG ©

This is why I lament and mourn. This is why I go around in rags and barefoot. This is why I howl like a pack of coyotes, and moan like a mournful owl in the night.

BBE ©

For this I will be full of sorrow and give cries of grief; I will go uncovered and unclothed: I will give cries of grief like the jackals and will be in sorrow like the ostriches.

NRSV ©

For this I will lament and wail; I will go barefoot and naked; I will make lamentation like the jackals, and mourning like the ostriches.

NKJV ©

Therefore I will wail and howl, I will go stripped and naked; I will make a wailing like the jackals And a mourning like the ostriches,

NET © Notes

tn The prophet is probably the speaker here.

tn Or “stripped.” The precise meaning of this Hebrew word is unclear. It may refer to walking barefoot (see 2 Sam 15:30) or to partially stripping oneself (see Job 12:17-19).

tn Heb “naked.” This probably does not refer to complete nudity, but to stripping off one’s outer garments as an outward sign of the destitution felt by the mourner.

tn Heb “I will make lamentation.”

tn Or “a jackal”; CEV “howling wolves.”

tn Heb “[make] a mourning.”

tn Or perhaps “ostrich” (cf. ASV, NAB, NASB, NRSV, NLT).
