Mark 14:5

It ¹  could have been sold for more than three hundred silver coins ²  and the money ³  given to the poor!” So ⁴  they spoke angrily to her.

It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the poor." And they rebuked her harshly.

"For this perfume might have been sold for over three hundred denarii, and the money given to the poor." And they were scolding her.

"She could have sold it for a small fortune and given the money to the poor!" And they scolded her harshly.

This perfume could have been sold for well over a year's wages and handed out to the poor." They swelled up in anger, nearly bursting with indignation over her.

We might have got more than three hundred pence for it, and given the money to the poor. And they said things against her among themselves.

For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii, and the money given to the poor." And they scolded her.

"For it might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor." And they criticized her sharply.

¹ tn Here γάρ (gar) has not been translated.

² tn Grk “three hundred denarii.” One denarius was the standard day’s wage, so the value exceeded what a laborer could earn in a year (taking in to account Sabbaths and feast days when no work was done).

³ tn The words “the money” are not in the Greek text, but are implied (as the proceeds from the sale of the perfumed oil).

⁴ tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “so” to indicate the implied result of previous action(s) in the narrative.
