Isaiah 42:20

You see ¹  many things, but don’t comprehend; ²  their ears are open, but do not hear.”

You have seen many things, but have paid no attention; your ears are open, but you hear nothing."

You see and understand what is right but refuse to act on it. You hear, but you don’t really listen."

You've seen a lot, but looked at nothing. You've heard everything, but listened to nothing.

Seeing much, but keeping nothing in mind; his ears are open, but there is no hearing.

He sees many things, but does not observe them; his ears are open, but he does not hear.

¹ tn The consonantal text (Kethib) has a perfect, 2nd person masculine singular; the marginal reading (Qere) has an infinitive absolute, which functions here as a finite verb.

² tn Heb “but you do not guard [i.e., retain in your memory]”; NIV “but have paid no attention.”
