Acts 14:8

In ¹  Lystra ²  sat a man who could not use his feet, ³  lame from birth, ⁴  who had never walked.

In Lystra there sat a man crippled in his feet, who was lame from birth and had never walked.

At Lystra a man was sitting who had no strength in his feet, lame from his mother’s womb, who had never walked.

While they were at Lystra, Paul and Barnabas came upon a man with crippled feet. He had been that way from birth, so he had never walked.

There was a man in Lystra who couldn't walk. He sat there, crippled since the day of his birth.

And at Lystra there was a certain man, who from birth had been without the use of his feet, never having had the power of walking.

In Lystra there was a man sitting who could not use his feet and had never walked, for he had been crippled from birth.

And in Lystra a certain man without strength in his feet was sitting, a cripple from his mother’s womb, who had never walked.

In ¹  Lystra ²  sat a man who could not use his feet, ³  lame from birth, ⁴  who had never walked.

¹ tn Grk “And in.” Because of the difference between Greek style, which often begins sentences or clauses with “and,” and English style, which generally does not, καί (kai) has not been translated here.

² sn Lystra was a city in Lycaonia about 18 mi (30 km) south of Iconium.

³ tn Grk “powerless in his feet,” meaning he was unable to use his feet to walk.

⁴ tn Grk “lame from his mother’s womb” (an idiom).

sn The description lame from birth makes clear how serious the condition was, and how real it was. This event is very similar to Acts 3:1-10, except here the lame man’s faith is clear from the start.
