Luke 4:12

Jesus ¹  answered him, ²  “It is said, ‘You are not to put the Lord your God to the test.’” ³ 

Jesus answered, "It says: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’"

And Jesus answered and said to him, "It is said, ‘YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.’"

Jesus responded, "The Scriptures also say, ‘Do not test the Lord your God.’"

"Yes," said Jesus, "and it's also written, 'Don't you dare tempt the Lord your God.'"

And Jesus made answer and said to him, It is said in the Writings, You may not put the Lord your God to the test.

Jesus answered him, "It is said, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’"

And Jesus answered and said to him, "It has been said, ‘You shall not tempt the LORD your God.’"

Jesus ¹  answered him, ²  “It is said, ‘You are not to put the Lord your God to the test.’” ³ 

¹ tn Grk “And Jesus.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

² tn Grk “Jesus, answering, said to him.” This is redundant in English and has been simplified to “Jesus answered him.”

³ sn A quotation from Deut 6:16 used by Jesus in reply to the devil. The point is that God’s faithfulness should not be put to the test, but is rather a given.
