Hosea 7:5

At the celebration ¹  of their king, ²  his princes become inflamed ³  with wine; they conspire ⁴  with evildoers.

On the day of the festival of our king the princes become inflamed with wine, and he joins hands with the mockers.

On the day of our king, the princes became sick with the heat of wine; He stretched out his hand with scoffers,

"On royal holidays, the princes get drunk. The king makes a fool of himself and drinks with those who are making fun of him.

On the royal holiday the princes get drunk on wine and the frenzy of the mocking mob.

On the day of our king, the rulers made him ill with the heat of wine; his hand was stretched out with the men of pride.

On the day of our king the officials became sick with the heat of wine; he stretched out his hand with mockers.

In the day of our king Princes have made him sick, inflamed with wine; He stretched out his hand with scoffers.

² tc The MT preserves the awkward 1st person common plural suffix reading מַלְכֵּנוּ (malakenu, “our king”). The BHS editors suggest reading the 3rd person masculine plural suffix מַלְכָּם (malkam, “their king”; so CEV), as reflected in the Aramaic Targum.

³ tc The MT vocalizes the consonants החלו as הֶחֱלוּ a Hiphil perfect 3rd person common plural from I חָלָה (“to become sick”). However, this is syntactically awkward. The BHS editors suggest revocalizing it as Hiphil infinitive construct + 3rd person masculine singular suffix from חָלַל (khalal, “to begin”) or Hiphil perfect 3rd person common plural from חָלַל.
